Alma Susan Richards Sherman passed away on April 26, 2015 in St. George, Utah at the age of 97. She was born in Stillwell, Oklahoma, the third child and only daughter of Joseph C. Richards and Effie May Mitchell. Her family moved to Arizona when she was thirteen where she finished high school. Because times were hard, she went to work to help the family instead of pursuing the education she had dreamed of.
She married Hobert Burris who blessed her with four beautiful children and the gospel of Jesus Christ, the greatest treasures of her life. She and Hobert later divorced. In 1978, she met and married her eternal companion, Leonard Sherman.
Alma was a member of the Church of Jesus of Christ Latter-day Saints. She held many church callings over the years, but her favorite was ward librarian where she served for nearly thirty years with her friends Patsy Dodge and Elsie Pancratz. She loved reading and doing crossword puzzles. She had a great love for people, with no consideration for racial or class differences---they were all just people to her.
Alma is survived by her children Judy and Rick Burris and many beloved grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and lifelong friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, two of her daughters, Shirley Burris and Linda Keyes and three grandchildren, Jacque, Kenny and Jeremy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2015 at 11:00am at the LDS Chapel, 15 West First Ave, Mesa, AZ 85210. A viewing will begin at 9:30am prior to services at the same location. Interment in the Mesa City Cemetery.
