Charles Walters

Rock Springs native Charles William Walters died Wednesday, October 4 in St. George, Utah after a brief illness. He was 95.
He was born in Rock Springs to William and Mary Walters in 1922 and was a grandson of Rock Springs pioneers Noah and Elizabeth Walters. He attended Rock Springs High and graduated in 1941. He married Dolores Menghini in 1955. They lived in Rock Springs, then Roy, Utah and Citrus Heights, California, adding a child to the family in each state.
He served with the U.S. Army in World War II, deploying and maintaining radio communications in North Africa and Italy. After the war, he ran a radio and appliance repair business and held other jobs in Rock Springs. He entered civilian government service first at Hill Air Force Base in Utah and then at McClellan Air Force Base in California. He played the trombone and was a member of his high-school marching band, the Union Pacific Coal Company band, and the Sacramento Valley Concert Band.
Not long after Charles retired, he and Dolores embarked on a kind of slow tour of the west. They began and ended in St. George with stops of a few years each in Bullhead City, Arizona; Laughlin, Nevada; Reno, Nevada; Medford, Oregon; and Grants Pass, Oregon. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary two summers ago in St. George.
He is survived by daughter Rosalie Foote and husband Tom of St. George; son Bill Walters and wife Cassandra of Portland, Oregon; son-in law Pat Murphy of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren, Kimberly Foote of Morgantown, West Virginia; Thomas Foote of St. George; Matt Walters of Portland; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Dolores and by daughter Caroline (Walters) Murphy of Eagle Point, Oregon.
A graveside service will take place on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 11:00 am at Tonaquint Cemetery.
