Denice Greathouse

d. February 9, 2012

Denice Greathouse passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Red Cliff Health Center in St. George, Utah. Denice was born in Lynndyl, Utah June 5, 1928 to Fred Russell Greathouse and Margie Elizabeth Farnsworth the second of ten children.

After graduating from Delta High School she attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City for two years. Following these years of study she joined the Women's Army Corps for three years. She was stationed at Fort Lee Virginia and served as a physical fitness instructor. Exercise, diet and healthy living habits became a way of life for Denice and she set a fine example for all of the younger members of the family to follow. While in the army she developed a liking for arts and crafts. She became skilled in copper work, leather tooling and silver jewelry. Her military service entitled her to the G.I. Bill which enabled her to continue her education after being discharged from the army.

She attended Utah State Agricultural College graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree June 4, 1955. While attending an art class she designed a wool hooked rug which depicted her farm life in Lynndyl showing the house, her mother and father and the ten children. This weaving won the Student Agathon Art Festival Award from the Department of Fine Arts and was one of Denice's most prized possessions.

After graduating from Utah State, Denice was a Geriatric nurse at Salt Lake County Hospital. After her nursing, she was a draftsman for a short period of time in Salt Lake City. She then moved to California and pursued a degree in Occupational Therapy which became her life's work. She worked many years in Long Beach, California before retiring to Delta October 1990.

A special relationship existed between her and her youngest niece Tess Greathouse. Denice was deeply dedicated to Tess. She participated in raising her from childhood to adulthood. The two of them were devoted to each other and spent many hours together going to Tuachan, participating in Special Olympics, school work, musical events and exercise. Tess had no limitations where Denice was concerned. Tess learned a great deal from Denice and in turn was a big help to her Aunt.

Denice had a cute sense of humor which you could miss if you weren't paying attention. She loved to shop, especially for Tess. She would go out of her way to help anyone she could. If you ever did anything for Denice you could expect a call the next day thanking you. Denice will be greatly missed by her family, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her sisters: Colleen (Mike) Mickelson Washington, Utah, LaRae (George) Maxwell Sandy, Utah, Cheryl (Bill) DeHart Ivins, Utah, Linda (Mike) Sandston, Leeds, Utah, brothers: Russell (Cindy) Greathouse Lynndyl, Utah, John (Ann) Greathouse, Omaha, Nebraska, Craig (Deb) Greathouse, Delta, Utah, sister-in-law Margie Greathouse Delta, Utah and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Margie Greathouse, sister Emagene and brother-in-law Kent Larsen, brother Ronald Greathouse and brother-in-law Eldon Levy.
