Francis Mcgregor

Francis W. McGregor, age 101, finished his mortal existence on July 31, 2012 at his home in St. George, Utah. He was born on June 11 1911 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah, the fifth child of James Stephen McGregor and Agatha Georgina Woods McGregor.

He married Hazel Hyde on November 2, 1932 in the Salt Lake Temple. Hazel preceded him in death on April 23, 2010.

He was raised and educated in Ogden, graduating form Ogden High School in 1929. He attended Weber College, studying engineering and geology. He later completed a correspondence course in mechanical and civil engineering, earning a certificate of completion. He did surveying and drafting for the U.S. Forest Service and in 1938 was one of the survey crews hired to survey and make the topographical map of the area now known as Hill Air Force Base.

His service with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers covered many years as he represented the Corps of Engineers as the Utah Resident Engineer for both civil and military construction at the many military bases in Utah. He constructed several satellite airstrips in Utah and Idaho for the F.A.A., built the mail distribution center in Salt Lake City for the U.S. Postal Service and, as part of the civil functions of the Corps, worked on most streams in the Great Basin regarding flood control. He was responsible for initiating the action and authorization of the Little Dell Dam, which was constructed after his retirement.

He did private consulting work for many projects. He built a home in South Ogden and a mountain cabin in Summit County. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, raising his family on wild game. His wife faithfully prepared wonderful meals with the varieties of game.

He enjoyed and participated in all types of sports, had an inventive mind and was always thinking of better and faster ways to accomplish certain tasks. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. He loved reading, mostly of historical times and events. He had many friends and associates during his long life. He enjoyed good health and considered himself a patriot of this great nation.

His philosophy was that every person has the obligation to try to contribute to society in some positive manner. He was adventurous and to celebrate his 100 ^th birthday, with his son Reed and grandson-in law Bernie, he did a 14,000 feet skydive in Mesquite, Nevada.

He is survived by his brother Robert L. McGregor of St. George, Utah, and his children: F. Reed McGregor (Sherry), Roseanne Tucker (Neldon), of Salt Lake City, Utah, Bonnie Rae Wright (Douglas) of Mountain Green, Utah, and a brother-in-law, Joseph Hyde (Norma) of Aurora, Utah, who he and Hazel raised along with their son Reed. Also survived by 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 6, 2012 at the Morningside 5 ^th Ward Chapel, 912 S. 1740 E. St. George, Utah at 11:00 AM. A Graveside Service will be Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at the Ogden City Cemetery at 11:00 AM with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Lindquist Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Ogden, Utah.
