Herbert Lynn Mitchell, the man who could do anything—and we mean anything, though he might occasionally misplace his reading glasses in the process—passed peacefully on January 20, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by his family at his home. Born on September 17, 1943, in Murray, Utah, to Ira and Clara Mitchell, he married his sweetheart, Lona Jean Anderson, on February 1, 1962.
Lynn’s life was a masterpiece of creativity, practicality, and a dash of stubbornness, traits that helped him leave a lasting impression on everyone he met. If you ever asked Lynn, 'Can this be fixed, built, or transformed?' His answer was always yes—often better than new. With unshakeable will and endless curiosity, he mastered woodworking, painting, carving, mechanics, or fixing anything that broke (duct tape, and bailing wire never let him down), he found joy in creating, repairing, and tinkering.
Lynn’s love for adventure was just as broad, with dune buggies, boats, and family trips filling his life with stories that will echo for generations. His skills with a carving knife and brush were as legendary as his quick wit, big heart, and sense of humor, which was also brilliantly reflected in his extensive cowboy poetry collection.
Lynn didn’t just fix or create, he served. He served in many callings throughout his life and truly loved the gospel. He and Lona served a senior mission in Texas from 2006-2008, where he made lifelong friends and left a legacy of love and service. Whether maintaining apartments, repairing cars, or supporting missionaries, Lynn’s unwavering care left no one untouched.
To know Lynn was to feel like family. Genuine, kind, and effortlessly funny, he had a gift for making people laugh and feel at ease. His humor and boundless love will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
Lynn leaves behind a family who loved him deeply, including his cherished wife of 62 years, Lona Jean Anderson Mitchell; his children: Dayne (Karen) Mitchell of St. George; Angela (Kory) Saxton of Central; Eric (Ember) Mitchell of St. George; Karen (Scott) Saxton of St. George; Jeff (Shannon) Mitchell of Idaho; and Kenny (Kelli) Mitchell of Idaho; forty-five grandchildren; eighty-six great-grandchildren (and counting); and his sister, Dixie (Glen) Robinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Clara, and his siblings, Jay and Jewell, and countless loved ones. His memory will live on in the many lessons he imparted, the projects he completed, and the love and laughter that filled every room he entered.
The family would like to thank Dixie Hospice for their compassionate care, as well as the incredible medical professionals who have provided excellent service over the years.
