Born July 7, 1921, Iris Wood Dalton, dedicated mother and wife, lover of beauty and an independent woman, lived a life full of more than a simple girl from Kanarraville, Utah could have ever imagined. She passed away on July 20, 2015 in St. George, Utah at the age of 94 and will be remembered as often saying how much she loved life.
The second of ten children born to Jewett and Eva Alvira (Cripps) Wood, Iris was raised during the Depression in a loving, two-room home with dirt floors and no running water. She is survived by two siblings, Adlia Donald Wood (Joyce Warner) and Uvada Maki.
Joseph Lewis Dalton (1920-1997) proposed to Iris after just two dates and they married when both were just 18-years-old on September 9,1939 and were sealed to each other and their two daughters Shauna (John Hart) and Pam (George Haley) in the St. George Temple in 1955.
After over 30 moves, Lewis and Iris finally settled in Parowan, Utah in 1960. Their adorable white house on Center Street was lovingly cared for and often filed with the smell of homemade bread or pies for 45 years. Iris was a gifted gardener and spent hours making her yard a beautiful place to be on a summer afternoon. In 2005, nine years after Lewis’ death, she moved to Washington, Utah to be closer to family which has always been the most important thing in Iris' life. Her two daughters, grandchildren A’Lissa (Mark Olson), Jennifer House, Jeremy Haley, Jared (Jess) Haley and Jacob (Melissa) Haley as well as her 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson with a second on the way will miss her twinkling eyes, eager hugs and light-hearted laugh.
A hard worker, Iris had several jobs throughout her life, from bookkeeper to sheepherder and from car-hop to bank teller. She touched many hearts while working with Primary children, young women and the Relief Society sisters in her LDS Ward. Iris loved people and had a friendly smile for everyone she met. A sharp dresser, she always had just the right hat and necklace for her outfit. She loved to travel and longed to see beautiful, far away lands every chance she could including Europe several times, China, Mexico, Canada and most of the United States.
Iris has embarked on a new journey now. She will reunite with family and friends and feel the embrace of her loving Savior, Jesus Christ and will undoubtedly make heaven a more beautiful place to be.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 12 noon in the Parowan Utah City Cemetery.
