Joan Marelda Throckmorton Reading age 82, passed away in St. George, Utah on June 14, 2019. She was born September 12, 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph Cecil Throckmorton and Gertie Marelda Jensen. She married Lynn James Reading in Sugar House, Utah on June 5, 1958; they were later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 21, 1968.
Joan was raised in Salt Lake CIty, Utah, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She attended the University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. She taught physical education and health classes at a junior high school in Provo, Utah, and later at the University of Washington and Iowa State University. She married Lynn J. Reading and lived in Pullman, Washington; Ames, Iowa; Oxford, Ohio; Normal, Illinois; and Redlands, California. Joan and Lynn retired to St. George, Utah in 2012.
She served in many church callings, including Relief Society President, Young Women’s President, and Primary and Seminary teachers, as well as in all stake auxiliaries. Joan and Lynn were called to serve a church service mission as directors of Camp Hinckley in Running Springs, CA from 2010 to 2012. She was very selfless and compassionate towards others.
She loved sports and was very athletic. She played tennis, softball, basketball, and synchronized swimming. She loved jogging, hiking, camping, canoeing, and fishing. She was an avid reader, and a Scouting supporter and leader. She loved sewing, gardening, and canning; music, singing and playing the piano. She traveled to almost every state in the U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as internationally to Canada, Mexico, and Japan.
Joan is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lynn J. Reading, and by her five children - Michelle Evans of St. George, UT; Rebecca (Glen) Gordon of Chino Hills, CA; Christie (Ron) Bowman of Provo, UT; Julie (Mike) Andrew of Rexburg, ID; and Scott (Allie) Reading of Highland, CA. She is also survived by her four siblings - Dee Throckmorton, Ted Throckmorton, Bonnie Ferrin, and Connie Smith. She had 21 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, who were the joy of her life.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 11:00am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 82 N. Dixie Drive, St. George, UT 84770. There will be no viewing or interment services.
