Our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, husband and friend graduated from mortality and returned to his heavenly home after a long, valiant fight with heart disease on March 11, 2025. John was born April 16, 1938 in Holladay, Utah to John LeRoy Dame and Carol Elizabeth Cowley.
He graduated from Olympus High School in 1956, attended the University of Utah for 2 years until 1958.
He then served a mission for the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints to Uruguay for 2 years. Then back to the U of U to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts. Then he attended Brigham Young University and graduated with an MBA in business and finance.
He married Mary Jane Steed and had 6 children, then he married Carolyn Goetz Rohovit and had one more child. While he was raising his family he was very involved in scouting with his boys. He helped them earn their eagle awards. He enjoyed taking his family on camping trips. He loved hunting and fishing with his father and the family.
He worked in Richland, Washington for Douglas United Nuclear from 1965-1969 Business Planning and Analysis. He then worked for General Electric Systems from 1969-1971 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Then Utah Highway Safety Office( State of Utah) 1971-2002. Grant writing and Project Manager. Part time taught National Safety Council’s defensive driving courses.
Married Ingrid Schruhl Guzman May 10,1997 in the Jordan River Temple. Moved to St George, Utah Dec 2001. John and Ingrid built a beautiful home at Bear Lake, Idaho and spent 15 wonderful summers there. The kids and grandkids have wonderful memories of that lovely place.
John then spent 17 years in St George as a substitute teacher. The kids loved him. John had many church callings. He taught Sunday School, Seminary, MIA, was Elders Quorum President, served as a counselor in several Bishoprics, was a temple tour guide in SLC, was an ordinance worker in St George temple for 6 years and worked in the baptistry for about 15 years and other callings.
John had many talents. He could always make people laugh and had such a wonderful sense of humor. He was an artist, painted many, many paintings, mostly of Southern Utah. He was gifted with a beautiful bass voice. He sang in the Utah Oratorio Society, Jay Welsh Chorale and every ward choir. The longest choir membership was in the Morningside 7th ward for 22 years.
John and Ingrid loved to cruise . They were able to visit many countries and meet many wonderful people from all over the world. Two of his favorites were Australia and New Zealand and visiting the Rome temple for the open house followed by a Mediterranean cruise to Italy and Spain. John was a very special man and will be missed by family, friends and neighbors. Everyone who knew him, loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter, Laura, Dame son Anthony Dame, sister Joan Dame Larsen and sister Nancy Dame Knight, step son Lance Guzman.
He is survived by his wife Ingrid, daughters; Kathryn Dame Bennion (Stan), Carol Dame Freebairn (Dana), sons; Christopher Dame( Allison), Gregory Dame,(Virginia), Matthew Dame (Gabi) step daughters: Melanie Guzman Wakefield, Leah Guzman Carroll, Monica Guzman , Lisa Rohovit Young (Stacy) and stepson John Rohovit (Rachael), 22 grand children and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 29, 2025. A viewing will be held prior to services from 9:30-10:30am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Morningside 7th Ward Chapel located at 881 S. River Rd., St. George, UT 84790. Interment will be at the Holladay Memorial Park located at 4900 S. Memory Ln, Holladay, UT 84117 on Monday, March 31, 2025 at 1:00pm.
