Joseph David Shuck Jr.

Joseph David Shuck Jr., 77, Died on January 26, 2021 in St. George, UT.  David was born November 26, 1943, in Washington D.C. to Joseph David Shuck Sr. and Margaret Concetta DeMichele Shuck, a strong catholic family. He married Judith Anne Cobb in Media, PA on May 16, 1964.

David spent most of his growing up years in various parts of Pennsylvania, the oldest of six children. He adored each of his siblings, Donna Robinson, Robert Shuck, Kathleen (Kathy) Quinn, Margaret (Peggy) Barley, and Sandra (Sandy) Angello, and was honored to be their older brother. He, often, did whatever he could to have get-togethers with them, wanting them to know how much he loved and cared about each of them.

In his younger years, David cultivated his love of music. He had an excellent musical ear and taught himself to sing, play the guitar, and play the piano. He was the lead singer in his own rock band and was offered the chance to have a career as a professional singer. While he did not pursue fame and fortune, he happily pulled out his guitar and performed for family and friends. He would lead sing-a-longs that brought joy to those around him. He instilled a love of music into each of his children.

After marrying his wife, David joined the US Navy in October of 1964, served two years active duty with one tour to Vietnam during the war. His Navy time was spent on the USS Fred T. Berry, a destroyer where he volunteered to become a barber for the crew. He would express his gratitude for his time in the Navy because of the many places he was able to travel throughout the world and the blessing of seeing minimal war action. After the two years he spent in the Navy, he decided it was time to go home and be with his wife and two young boys.

On September 1, 1969, he graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Villanova University. He began his career as a claims adjuster for State Farm, but later decided insurance wasn’t for him and ventured into various sales positions before deciding that car sales were the type of sales he enjoyed the most. He retired from sales after working for Southern Coach Van Conversions due to myriad health conditions.

David and Judy decided to have their third child because he wanted to be the father of a little girl. Thankfully, he was granted the baby daughter that he wanted, and he and his wife decided their family was complete. Due to his traveling opportunities from working in sales, David discovered his interest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints after running out of money during a company trip, in Cedar City, Utah. He visited Salt Lake City, UT, after getting funds to finish his trip, and knew the Church was for him and his family. He promptly returned home and announced to his wife that they were going to be baptized. His wife agreed to join the Church, under the condition that they would not have any more children. In January of 1977, the Shuck family joined the Church, changing their lives and their goals forever. Soon David decided that there were two more children meant to join their family, which resulted in his second daughter then his third son. The Shuck family was sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington D.C. temple on June 3, 1978. He served faithfully in the Church, including being a temple worker at the St George temple. He spent the remaining years of his life in service of the church and never missed a chance to share his love of the Church with his family and anyone who would listen.

Over the years, he cultivated his different hobbies. He greatly enjoyed hunting and fixing cars in his younger years, fished in lakes and oceans, road his motorcycles, his favorite being his Harley Davidson, golfed, read books, and acted and sang in local theater, until he just wasn’t able to anymore. He loved to travel doing all he could to have summer vacations whenever possible. After his children were married, he and his wife enjoyed cruises, visiting Hawaii, and taking road trips to visit children and grandchildren. Even with all these hobbies, the most important thing to him was his family.

During his marriage, he and his wife moved over 30 times, living in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, North Carolina, and finally settled in St George, in November of 1996. David wanted to live in St. George since his first trip through in December of 1976. After moving to St. George, he felt like he finally found where he belonged. They found their final house in February of 2001 and have loved their neighborhood and ward family ever since.

He is survived by the love of his life, Judy Shuck, wife of over 56 years, and his five children Jason (Lena) Shuck, Richard (Ginny) Shuck, Jennifer (Justin) Bates, Tina (Steven) Cannon, and Christopher (Allison) Shuck, his twenty-four grandchildren, Alicia (Jake) Frost, Michelle Shuck, Anthony (Paige) Shuck, Jonnathen (Tiana) Lorenzo, Jeanette (Ryan Neilson) Lorenzo, Mitchelle (Aubria) Shuck, Cody Shuck, Curby Shuck, Elizabeth Shuck, Ethan Shuck, Caroline (Caleb) Barzee, Hilton Bates, Lorelai Bates, Rachel Thomas, Sasha Shuck, Piper Cannon, Jessica (Austin) Young, Jaren Cannon, Logan Cannon, JD Shuck, Afton Shuck, Grace Shuck, Matthew Shuck, and Jonah Shuck,  and 17 great-grandchildren Hailey, Kade, Kole, Hudson, Cooper, Kohlten, Ian, Daymien, Kash, Kage, Elayna, Dante, Hadassah, Sagelee, Leia, Collin, and June. He was preceded in death by his Father Joseph Shuck Sr., his Mother, Margaret Shuck Troiano, his Step-father, Robert Troiano his sister Kathleen Quinn, his Brother, Robert Shuck, and his grandchildren, Charlotte Thomas and Avery Cannon.

A memorial service will be held at his local church February 12, 2021 at 12:00 PM. Due to COVID restrictions, only immediate family members can attend. A live broadcast will be provided for others who would like to participate in celebrating David's life. Immediately following, those who wish to pay their respects can join the family for his interment at the Tonaquint Cemetery at 1:30 PM, located at 1777 South Dixie DR, St, George, UT 84770.
