Karl Jenkins

Karl William Jenkins, 1st Sgt, USMC Retired, died on December 26, 2018. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 25, 1929 to Ellsworth Levi and Stella Hitchings Jenkins.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps just after his 16th birthday and was deployed to China at the end of World War Two. Karl was also stationed in Camp Le Jeune, NC, Scotia, NY, Minneapolis, MN, and Kaneohe, HI. Karl served in the Korean Conflict, where he participated in the severe battle at the Chosin Reservoir. He was then transferred to Boston, MA where he met and married his wife of 59 years, Marjorie Smith Bury, and became the father of 20 month old son Douglas Bury Jenkins. The family was then sent to a second tour of duty at Kaneohe, HI, where they adopted their infant daughter, Sherri Hokulani Henderson, now living on the island of Guam. After Hawaii the family moved to Camp Pendleton, CA and were there while Karl served a tour in Vietnam, following with a brief tour in Albany, GA where Karl retired from the USMC. The Family then went to Vermont and then to Camden, NY where Karl worked 20 years for the NY State Dept. of Labor where he achieved his 2nd retirement.

Karl and Marge then began many years of volunteer work with the National Park Service, BLM, and US Forest Service in various places throughout the country.  They also served full time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in South Africa, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Hawaii, Florida, and at Cove Fort.  Karl has been a active member of the Church since 1970 and has served faithfully in many callings, most recently as Sunday School President in the Spring Gardens Branch of the Buena Vista Stake.

He is survived by his wife Marge, son Doug (Lynette), daughter Sherri (Don) eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren .  He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, George and Robert.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Spring Gardens assisted living facility, 2654 Red Cliffs Drive in St. George, Utah.
