Kay Virginia Houghton Yeates, loving mother of 7, and adoring wife to husband Daryl Yeates, peacefully passed away in St. George, Utah on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the age of 81. Kay was born on December 1, 1940 to Orson Glenn and Dorothy Virginia Houghton in Salt Lake City, Utah. During a magical childhood, Kay shares many memories of growing up close to her cousin’s Barbara Call Wiser, Lynn Urry, and JoAnn Call Raynor Davis. In 1955, Kay graduated from South High School in Denver, CO, and then attended BYU In Provo, Utah. Kay and Daryl shared a sweet love story and wrote many letters while he was serving a LDS mission in Chicago, IL. Upon his return, she was sealed for time and eternity to Daryl Rodney Yeates, her eternal companion in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on December 27, 1962.
Kay received her Stewardess Diploma from United Airlines and worked as a Stewardess for a short time. She spent many years working for the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News as a District Manager. Kay resided in Denver until Daryl retired, when they moved to Ivins, Utah in 1998. She was drawn to the Red Mountain and quickly became involved in church humanitarian projects, monthly pot luck events, and traveling to visit her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family was the center of Kay’s life.
Kay served in many callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and especially enjoyed working with the children in the primary. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards with her friends. Her other hobbies included gardening, painting, sewing, hiking, and serving others with home baked goods. Kay learned to cook and make candies from her Grandmother, Thelma Seager Houghton who worked in a candy factory. Thelma also taught Kay how to play the piano.
Kay is survived by her loving husband Daryl Yeates and seven children: Sean Yeates, Tawnya Yeates, Tiffany (Dave) Gust, Erika (Steve) Glatt, Ashley (Adam) Garside, Devin (Rachel) Yeates, Alexander (Lauren) Yeates. Kay had 21 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren that she adored. Kay will be especially remembered by her infectious smile and loving kindness.
Funeral services will be Friday, September 2, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Winchester Hills Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5338 North Winchester Hills Drive, St. George, Utah. Visitation will be on Friday, September 2, 2022 from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the service. The funeral service will be live-streamed, please click on the link below.
Interment will be at Millville Nibley Cemetery in Cache County Utah on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 10:00 am. Services are under the direction of McMillan Mortuary 435-688-8880.
