Lorenzo Charles (Roy) Hymas, 80, died peacefully while sleeping in his own bed on January 23, 2014. He was born July 16, 1933 in Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho to Walter and Lillian Hymas.
Roy spent his earliest years in Paris, Idaho. The family then moved to Walker Mine, California about the time he started school and then to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he grew up. He got his education at Oquirrah Elementary, Jackson Junior High, and West High School. He later served in the US Army.
He got his first job at the age of 10 selling newspapers on the street corners of downtown Salt Lake City. He remembered the GIs coming home from WWII, buying his papers and sometimes tipping him a nickel or a dime. He always wanted to work and seemed able to find a job. Some of his jobs were: soda jerk, pinsetter, box car icer, candy maker, roofer, clerk typist, delivery man, meat cutter, and finally truck driver which is the job he loved best and did the longest. He hauled material at the Nevada Test Site and at Hanford, WA. He drove long haul, helped put in the dam at Lower Granite in WA, the dam and fish hatchery at Dworshak, ID and the levies that protected Lewiston, ID and Clarkston, WA from the rising waters of the Clear Water River and Snake River. It was said of him, "If it had wheels under it he could drive it". His last job was driving for MI Trucking, owned and operated by his daughter, Karen Huffman. He often said, "I drove until I couldn't do it anymore."
He liked to fish, hunt, garden, work in his shop, travel, be in the mountains among the pines, visit with family, and anything western.
He met Julie, his sweetheart of 55 years, in Salt Lake. They were married in Mesquite and later sealed in the St. George LDS Temple.
Julie survives him along with their children, Ron (Constance), Jace (Sherry), Cindy Stringham (Philip), Julie Rae Sullivan (Darrell), and Daniel Hymas, 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren from a former marriage. He is preceded in death by his parents, both siblings and his and Julie’s son, Lincoln Roy Hymas.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 11:00am at the Bennion 1st Ward LDS Chapel located at 3045 W. Bernina Dr., Taylorsville, Utah. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Murray Utah City Cemetery.
