Lorraine Randall Rands died peacefully on Monday, 6 May 2013, at her home in St. George, Utah, a few weeks after her 90 th birthday. She was the sweet, loving wife of Robert Winter Rands and devoted mother to six children, beloved grandmother to 41, and delightful great-grandmother to 91. Her life was filled with willing service to her community and church, including a high school service sorority, LDS Primary and Relief Society leadership, and devotion to her heritage with leadership in Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
Lorraine was born in 1923 to Harold and Louise Randall in Centerville, Utah, and moved to Ogden as a young woman. She met Robert there in high school; they were married in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on 8 April 1942. World War II separated them after the birth of their oldest child, so Lorraine moved to Inglewood, California, to be with her mother-in-law, and became a guiding influence on a considerable group of other young women left alone during the war years, helping to lift their spirits and maintain morale.
After the war, she moved with Robert to Edwards Air Force Base, where they soon bought their first home - a cozy, homemade rock house in Boron, California. As the family quickly grew, they returned to Inglewood, where she deftly managed the household and children while Robert earned an engineering degree at USC. In 1953, after her husband graduated, the family moved to South Pasadena, California, then bought a new house in Azusa, California. There Lorraine began her deep involvement in LDS Church Relief Society leadership and other responsibilities, including a significant contribution to Rands and Randall genealogical research.
Shortly thereafter, Lorraine and Robert moved the family to nearby Glendora, California, where she spent the longest period of her married life. After all her children were married and starting their own families, she served an LDS mission with Robert in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1990 to 1991. Upon their return, Lorraine and Robert relocated to Bloomington Hills, Utah, where they have lived in a home overlooking St. George. Their home has served as the crossroads for many Rands and Randall families. Her love, kindness, and friendship to others soon became legendary in her community.
She is survived by her husband Robert, St. George; sons Richard D. Rands (Janet Brigham) of Mountain View, California; Paul Jon Rands (Sandi Montelius) of Wilsonville, Oregon; Janice (Richard) Scott of Mapleton, Utah; Connie (Donn) Romito of Billings, Montana; and Marte (Von) Eyre of St. George, Utah. Lorraine and Robert's son Robert David passed away in January 2013. Also surviving her are 41 grandchildren and 91 great grandchildren, with more on the way.
Funeral services will be Friday, 10 May 2013, at 12:00 noon at the Bloomington Hills Fifth Ward LDS Chapel, 1130 E. Brigham Road, Bloomington Hills. A viewing will occur on Thursday evening, 9 May at the same Bloomington Hills Fifth Ward chapel from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, and again on Friday from 10:30am until 11:45am prior to the service. Lorraine will be buried on Saturday, 11 May 2013, at the Centerville, Utah, City Cemetery with a graveside service at 11a.m.
