Mary Katherine Sowers Elquist

Mary Katherine Sowers Elquist, our loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend left her earthly home May 21, 2013. Mary was born Dec. 27, 1929 to Albert W. Sowers and Lena Roosevelt Miller Sowers in Martinsburg, West Virginia. At one point she was adopted by her Aunt and Uncle Anna and Elijah Mason. They became her beloved parents

Mary had to quit school when she was a junior in high school to go to work, and support her mother. She first worked for Interwoven Stocking Company. Later she moved to Virginia, and worked for Learner's Clothing. She had also worked alongside her parents in cooking for the road men, and airport workers. Also, she worked with her parents at the State Farms Experimental Fields, and Mussulmen Apples.

She met the love of her life, Roger Noel Elquist, while he was serving in the United States Navy. They were married on June 5, 1954, and would have celebrated their 59 th anniversary next month. When Roger completed his Naval Service, they moved to Burley, Idaho to work on the farm with Roger's parents. The west was quite a change for Mary. She left all family, and her life, back in Virginia.

Mary and Roger spent most of their married years in Milton, Morgan, Utah. They moved to Ivins, Utah 15 years ago to enjoy the warmer weather. Mary and Roger spent many hours together rock hunting, fishing, and working in the yard. She was especially proud of her flowers, frogs, and hummingbirds.

Mary was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She will be remembered for her kindness and service to others. Despite her difficult childhood, she reached out to others throughout her life. She always loved visiting the older ladies in their ward, and taking meals into people who needed them. She was a very kind, sweet soul who loved and lived deeply. Mary especially loved doing things for Audrey and Noel, her in-laws, and loved them as her own.

Mary is survived by her husband, Roger Elquist of Ivins, Utah; Charlotte (Larry) Stephenson of Washington, Utah; Karen Burker of Clearfield Utah; Patty Nay of Fairview, Montana, and Michael (Lori) Elquist of Spanish Fork, Utah. She is the grandmother of 17 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister in laws, Joyce (Ed) Garrett of Olympia, Washington, and Nancy (Doug) Ford of Milton, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Anna Mason, in-laws, Noel and Audrey Elquist, her siblings, half- sister Marge, and great grandsons, Trevor Jace Pentz, and Tanner Jordan Stephenson.

Services will be held June 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Milton First Ward Chapel located at 1255 N. Morgan Valley Dr., Morgan, Utah. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Burial will be at the Milton Cemetery.
