Mary Weiss

August 8, 1931 — June 22, 2016

Mary Fern Reynolds Weiss, our sweetheart mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on June 22, 2016 at her home, surrounded by loved ones in St. George, Utah.

Mary was born August 8, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Emmy M. Malmquist and Clarence B. Reynolds.  Her mother Emmy bravely emigrated from Malmo, Sweden to America at age 17.  Her father Clarence graduated from the ‘Colorado School of Mines’, he was a hard rock mining engineer who traveled extensively in the western United States and Mexico.

Her childhood home located close to Liberty Park in downtown Salt Lake City was filled with laughter, adventure and 10 children.  Mary loved her family especially her 6 sisters.  She attended South High School.  She married Hyrum Elijah Weiss in the Salt Lake Temple on March 23, 1947.  She was a devoted and faithful wife.

Mom was an enthusiastic, eager lifelong learner.  She continued her formal education in California.  She was a student mentor and touched the lives of many.  With her intuitive insight and meaningful life experiences she was able to express herself as a writer and poetess, she had several works published.  Mary loved to travel, read, and delighted in meeting new people and having good conversations.  She always looked for the lonely and forgotten, giving them a warm smile and genuine compliment.  Everyone loved Mary.  Her kind generous spirit will live within us always.

Mary gave life to 5 beautiful children;  Jeff (Kris) Park City, UT, Ren (deceased), Guy Maple Valley, WA, Lisa (Robert) Provo, UT,  and Collin St. George, UT.  Her family was her greatest joy.  Mom’s unconditional love and continuous support was felt by all her children.  As a family they lived in Salt Lake City, UT; Burley & Idaho Falls, ID; Orem & Provo, UT; Redlands, CA; Sandy, UT; Las Vegas, NV; Thayne, WY; and St. George, UT.  She was preceded in death by her son Ren, daughter-in-law Noreen, 2 grandchildren, and her husband Hy.

The family wishes to express thanks to Dr. Claude Warner, staff of DRMC, IHC Hospice services, Luann Lundquist of Alzheimer & Dementia Society, Red Rock Center for Independence, and SunTrans ADA program.

Special recognition and gratitude to her son Collin who has been her caregiver for the last 4 1/2 years.

Graveside memorial services will be held Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 9:00am at Tonaquint Cemetery, St. George, Utah, under the direction of McMillan Mortuary.
