He was born on October 31, 1923 in Lorenzo, Idaho to Earl E. and Chloe Hawkins. He was the middle child with an older brother Rex and younger sister Elaine. As a young man he attended school in Nephi, Utah, helped with the operations of the family business and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints.

When WWII broke out he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 25, 1943 & served as a navigator on the USS Kennabago in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, 3rd Fleet Operations against Japan in the Marianas, Palau and Philippine Islands with raids against the China Coast, Formosa, Okinawa and the final all out operation against the Japanese homeland which contributed greatly to the Allied Victory. He was honorably discharged as a Quartermaster 3rd Class on December 14, 1945.

He married Colleen Holman on August 4, 1943 and they had 4 sons. She preceded him in death in 1985 after 42 years of marriage. He married Virginia Belich on January 27, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his son Carl Michael. He is survived by sons Richard (Virginia), Warren (Judy), and Wayne (Pat). He is also survived by his sister Elaine Garrett, 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Graveside services at VineBluff Cemetery (1250 N. 400 E.) will be held in Nephi, Utah on Saturday December 19, 2015 at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Ivins Veterans Home in Ivins, Utah.
