Philip Dean Zimmerman 92, passed away in St George Utah on August 30, 2021. He was born October 10, 1928 to Reuben Scott and Elizabeth Taylor Hutchinson in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married his sweetheart Carol Bonita Ingham in February of 1950.
Philip was never idle. At an early age he began helping his neighbor herd cows, doing odd jobs around the neighborhood, and had a paper route. He spent his summers hiking up to Mount Olympus, hauling hay, swimming in the canal, or floating down Cottonwood Creek on old piles of hay with his brothers.
Philip always had a love for cars. At the age of 16, he and his brother Stephen began building their own race cars and racing them on the old Highway out of Salt Lake, and also at the Salt Flats. Phil set a land speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats with his Class D Roadster.
He was always a hard worker. He taught his children by example that honest labor develops dignity and self-respect. He began working for Mountain Bell at the age of 18 where he quickly moved up the ranks to foreman, supervisor, and on up to the Contract Administrator. He later went into business for himself with Central Cable Construction servicing Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, and Idaho.
Philip had a passion for horses. Over the years he trained and owned several hundred of them. He shared his talent and love for horses and horse racing with his family. They grew up loving the game of horse racing, the call to post, the ring of the bells, and the hooves pounding into the dirt.
There are many fun adventures and memories that will be passed down through his posterity. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and spent many hours telling them stories of his childhood. He will be dearly missed and always in our hearts.
Philip was preceded in death by his wife Carol, parents R Scott and Elizabeth, brothers, Bryant Scott, Gerald Hutchinson, Stephen Ross, sisters Betty Jane, and Joyce M. and his oldest daughter Kristine.
He is survived by his children, Jon (Deborah), Stephen (Carla), Laurie, and Justin, 18 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
A special thanks to Canyon Home Health, Advanced Health Care, Doctor Roy, Doctor Magnesen, Doctor Codiga, and all their amazing staff for their great care and compassion.
Honoring Philip’s wishes, there will not be funeral services at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
