Robert Wesley Hunt, Jr. aka “Uncle Bob”, passed away peacefully December 6, 2015 in the arms of his loving wife and surrounded by his family after a short battle with colon cancer. Bob was born to Robert Sr. and Ruth Hunt in Boston, Massachusetts on Sept. 30, 1938.
He joined the United States Air Force in 1955 at the age of 17, and after completing EOD school he traveled the world serving his country. Some of his favorite places included northern Italy, Thailand and Alaska where he enjoyed lots of hunting and fishing. Bob selflessly served 4 tours in Vietnam, taught bomb school at Indian Head in Virginia, and landed at Hill AFB in 1975 where he headed the EOD program.
Bob retired in 1975, having served 31 years. He ended his military career as a Chief Master Sgt, the highest rank for an enlisted airman. He retired with countless honors and medals; including a Bronze Star and two Air Force commendations that he was most proud of. True to form Bob didn’t rest long. He joined the Davis County Sheriff's Office where he forged another brilliant career. He spent the next 27 years making a name for himself as a detective, bomb tech, and head of the crime lab. The sheriff’s office was his second home and the people there were his family. He loved what he did passionately and without rest. It was there he met and married his beautiful wife Terry in 1989 and instantly gained a family with her 5 children. He loved and protected them as fiercely as he did everything in life, and “Dad” doesn’t begin to describe what he meant to each one of them. Bob mentored countless men and women over the years and was regarded as a father to many.
His legacy of service, honesty, integrity, hard work, loyalty, and dedication was evident in everything he did, and to everyone who knew him. He had a crusty exterior and on the inside a heart of gold. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a wide reputation as a great practical joker, and was known for his great stories and adventures. In 2001 he was diagnosed with and soundly beat lung cancer, furthering the belief that he was mostly made of cast iron. He was a teacher, mentor, outdoorsman, golfer, movie and music lover, hero, father and friend. Above all he was one of a kind and completely irreplaceable. Our lives will be forever touched by his life and he will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his wife Terry, children Christian, Nora, Shanna, Jacob (Becky), Chelsea (Brett), 10 grandchildren (2 named for him), 1 great grandson, sister Frances (Rex), and brother Richard. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Sr. and Ruth, and brother George.
A memorial will be held in his honor On Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 11:00am at Lindquist’s Mortuary, 1867 N Fairfield Rd, Layton, Utah.
A service will also be held on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 11:00am at Sun River First Branch, 4461 S Country Club Dr, St. George, Utah.
