Roger Delynn Davis,75, passed away on Monday, August 21, 2017 at his home in St George, UT. He was born November 27, 1941 (Thanksgiving Day) in Delta, UT to Marion J (Tam) and Orda Helen Allen Davis. He grew up in Hinckley, Utah, later moving with his family to Delta, Utah. He was active in athletics during his high school years, where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He graduated from Delta High School and attended College of Southern Utah (SUU) and later Central Valley Vocational School (now UVU). He played basketball on a team for Central Valley Vocational School. He then transferred over to BYU for a time, where he practiced a lot with the BYU basketball team. After a few years, he returned to college classes at Southern Utah University and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Accounting.
He married Gaylyn Cropper from Deseret, UT. They were married in Deseret, UT on June 12, 1964 and later sealed in the Manti Temple on March 30, 1966. They started out living in Delta, Utah, but after two years, moved to Cedar City, where they lived for 43 years. About 7 years ago, they moved to St. George, Utah after retiring from working.
Roger started his working career with Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher clerk. He later worked for Carter Brothers Construction for 18 years as Office Manager/Accountant, and retired from Southern Utah University after 13 years of working in Student Loans, Purchasing agent and finally as the Aquatics Director for the new P.E. Building on campus at SUU.
Roger was a faithful and active member of the L.D.S. Church, serving in many callings in the priesthood, Sunday School teacher, Elders' Quorum Secretary, bishopric counselor, etc. He especially enjoyed his calling in the bishopric in a college ward in Cedar City, Utah. He and Gaylyn served a service mission at Warm Springs, Nevada for the L.D.S. Church. Roger was always very proud of his children and family and loved them very much.
For many years, Roger was very active in the Thunderbird Athletic Club at S.U.U. He loved athletics and also participated for 20 years in the Huntsman Senior Games in St. George, Utah, achieving many numerous medals in swimming and basketball skills. Because he had developed diabetes at age 50, he used his skills in swimming and exercise to keep his blood sugars in control and keep active and healthy. He enjoyed going to many venues of competing in athletic events on the senior level.
He is survived by his wife, Gaylyn of St George, UT; his children: Debbie (Doug) Chandler of Lehi, Utah; Gregory (Ashlee) Davis of Cedar City, Utah; Matthew (Holly) Davis of South Jordan, Utah; Jeffrey (Jennifer) Davis of Lehi,Utah; Christian (Leanne) Davis of San Francisco, California; 14 grandchildren; brother & sisters: Dennis (Linda) Davis of Moroni, Utah; Tami Hansen of Spanish Fork, Utah; and Cindy (Ralph) Christensen of Mapleton, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karolyn Lee Ivie, and brother, Ronald Davis.
Visitation will be Friday August 25, 2017 in St George, Utah from 6 to 8 at the Mall Drive LDS Church house (259 N. Mall Drive) and Saturday August 26, 2017 in Cedar City, Utah from 9:30-10:45am at the Cedar West Stake Center (725 S 1100 W) with funeral services to follow at 11am. Interment will be at the Cedar City Utah Cemetery.
