Rulon S. Hurst, age 95, passed away quietly Saturday, April 23, 2022 in Topeka, Kansas. Rulon was devoted to his wife, Emma Elizabeth Jolley Hurst, who preceded him in death. She was his school sweetheart, the only girl he ever dated. They were married for 64 years.
Rulon was born September 25, 1926 to Wesley Leon and Martha Velma Norton Hurst in Woodville, Idaho. Living on the farm taught Rulon the value of hard work, his parents and five siblings taught him the importance of love and faith in God. Theirs was a happy, busy home. World War II was raging while Rulon was in high school, and when he was 18, Rulon was inducted into the Army in 1945. Before being shipped overseas, he married his sweetheart in the Salt Lake City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of Rulon’s assignments in the Army was as a member of Joint Task Force 1, participating in the two atomic bomb tests on Bikini Atoll.
After being discharged from the Army, Rulon went to Idaho State College and studied engineering, graduating with honors. His first job was with KOOK TV in Billings, Montana. Later, he accepted a position as an instrument man with Continental Oil Co. His hard work and skill allowed him to be promoted to many higher positions and moving to several states. Years later, he was hired by Tenneco Oil to design and oversee the construction of their oil pipeline system.
Rulon was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He has one surviving sister, Shirlene Wrigley of Burley, Idaho; three daughters: Connie Schreiner (Kenneth), Bonnie Stevens (Daryl), and Diane Tolbert (Richard); son Michael Leon Hurst (Lorrie); daughter-in-law Pauline; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. His son, Duane Rulon Hust preceded him in death.
We will miss his quirky sense of humor, his big hugs and sweet smile, but know he is happy to be reunited with his dearly loved wife.
