Shirlie married Philo Sims Carter on June 10, 1954 in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple and, then joined him at Fort Lewis, Washington where he was stationed in the Army. They returned to Phoenix for the birth of their 1st child Philo Jr. When Philo was released from the military they lived and ran a dairy farm for his father. They then moved around as he drove truck on construction jobs until the kids started school. They settled down for a time in Miami, AZ where Philo drove truck hauling ore to the mines and Shirlie took a job driving school bus (the 1st woman driver there). When the copper mines slowed down, he found work in Escalante, Utah. Then to Richfield, to Vernal, and finally back to Phoenix to live with and care for Shirlie’s mother, Harriet Johnson. Then moved to Peoria, AZ to be near their son Phil and family as Philo prepared to retire. When both had health problems and were needing help, they moved in with daughter Debbie and her husband Lynn in St George, Utah.
Philo had diabetes, Parkinson’s and kidney failure. Shirlie lost her love on May 29, 2019 just short of their 65th anniversary.
Shirlie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Serving in various capacities thru the years. She was a wonderful example to her family and those around her.
The family will be gathering to celebrate and honor her life at a later date.
