After high school, Thelma moved to Washington State to live with her sister Alice. They both worked at a hospital in Medical Lake.

Thelma married her high school sweetheart, George Vollmer, in Pocatello, Idaho on November 24, 1943 during a World War II furlough. After the war, George and Thelma purchased their farm and have lived there since 1946.
