William “Bill”

Bill Gross passed away unexpectedly on May 3, 2013. He was 82 years old.

Bill was born on a farm near Warsaw, Indiana on June 17, 1930, the last child in a family of six boys and one girl. After graduating from a one room school house that taught all grades, he joined the United States Marine Corps. On September 15, 1950 his unit made the Inchon Landing in Korea. Days later, Seoul, South Korea fell to American forces, contributing to the major turning point in the war. He was wounded in combat and received a purple heart.

After recovering, he was sent to Germany for the WWII Recovery Effort as an embassy guard. It was here that he met his future bride, Anita Lou Harvey, who was a secretary in the foreign service for HICOG (High Commissioner of Germany). They were married in Bern, Switzerland, on July 8, 1953.

He left the Marine Corps after 11 years and began working for the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). He installed TACAN radar towers, which monitor all flight across the western region of the United States. In 1968, he became a regular on the crew that serviced the radar at the Fallon Naval Air Station (Northern Nevada), where he worked until he retired after a total of 27 years. In 1985, he retired, as many people do, to St. George, Utah.

He is survived by his wife, Anita; his children, Doug (Sharon), Jana, and Gary; and two granddaughters.
